One of the best things about living in Washington, DC are the many many FREE museums! The exhibits are amazing and thought provoking and it’s something easy to do. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden features modern art, and never disappoints. We have seen two exhibits in the past year or so that we loved.
The Ai Weiwei exhibit that is currently being shown until February 24, 2013 does a great job of showing the range and breath of this artist. It almost feels like an interactive exhibit (it isn’t though!) due to the scale of the pieces. And definitely provokes.
In May, the circular facade of the Hirshhorn was transformed into “liquid architecture” by Doug Aitken. He blended moving imagery using 11 high-definition projectors to create a convex 360-degree panorama. It was amazing to see the sights and sounds of art on the outside of the building. People just rode their bikes over, put them down and stopped to watch and listen on their way home from work. It was very peaceful and thrilling at the same time.
If you are looking to do something with your out-of-town guests for the winter holidays this is a great museum for that. Grab a quick and easy lunch nearby at Paul, Teaism or Gordon Biersch. Go for a little ice skating in the Sculpture Garden to get the blood flowing or pop over to Anthropologie, Zara and H&M for some retail therapy. Everyone will be happy!
